Alpina
Switzerland · Founded 1883
Founded 1883 by Gottlieb Hauser as a cooperative of independent Swiss watchmakers, originally under the name Union Horlogère (sources differ on Winterthur vs Geneva as the founding city, and the account is thinly sourced beyond Wikipedia). Alpina pioneered the concept of the modern Swiss sports watch, formalized in 1938 as the 'Alpina 4' concept: antimagnetic, antishock, water-resistant, stainless steel. One secondary source claims operations ceased during the quartz crisis (reported as 1981) before relaunch; not independently corroborated. Relaunched in 2002 under Peter Stas (full name Peter Constant Stas, with spouse Aletta Stas), who also owned Frédérique Constant. Union Horlogère Holding B.V. (parent of Frédérique Constant, Alpina, and Ateliers deMonaco) was acquired by Citizen Watch Co. of Japan in 2016. Headquartered in Plan-les-Ouates, Geneva, alongside Frédérique Constant. Best known for the Alpiner, Startimer (pilot), and Seastrong (diver) collections, plus the AlpinerX hybrid smartwatch launched via Kickstarter in 2018. Sourced primarily from us.alpinawatches.com, Wikipedia, Monochrome Watches, and aggregated brand-history sites (WristBuzz, AuthenticWrist, WatchAtlas) via WebFetch; WebSearch quota was exhausted early in this research session, so sourcing leaned on WebFetch against known URLs and DuckDuckGo HTML search rather than live web search.
