Ball Watch Company
Switzerland · Founded 1891
Founded 1891 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA by Webb C. Ball, who was appointed Chief Time Inspector for US railroads after a fatal 1891 train collision at Kipton, Ohio caused in part by an inaccurate conductor's watch. Ball developed the 'RR Standard' (Railroad Standard) certification for railroad-grade timepieces (17+ jewels, lever-set, 5-position adjustment, tight rate tolerance) and ran a nationwide watch-inspection service, giving the brand its enduring railroad-heritage identity (see Trainmaster line). Company is now a privately held Swiss watchmaker headquartered in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland; produced roughly 5,000 COSC-certified chronometers in 2015 per Wikipedia. Best known today for tool/adventure watches using proprietary micro gas tube (tritium, H3) illumination on hands, dials and bezels, plus patented shock/magnetism protection systems (Amortiser, SpringLOCK, SpringSEAL, Mu-metal shielding). Sourcing: Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ball_Watch_Company) and ballwatch.com. Could not confirm current ownership/parent-company structure from available sources -- left out rather than guessed.
