Benrus
United States · Founded 1921
Founded in New York City in 1921 as a watch-repair shop by Romanian-American brothers Benjamin, Oscar, and Ralph Lazrus; the name is a portmanteau of Benjamin Lazrus's name. Assembled Swiss-movement watches domestically from the 1920s, becoming a major mid-century American manufacturer (Sky Chief, Citation, Embraceable, Dial-a-Rama, Wrist Alarm) and a significant U.S. military supplier from WWII through Vietnam, most notably the early-1970s Type I and Type II dive/field watches issued to Navy SEALs, UDT divers, Army Special Forces, and reportedly CIA personnel. Financial trouble followed Japanese quartz competition: Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1977, a reorganization joint venture with Wells and Roka Watch Company, a second bankruptcy in 1981 after defaulted royalty payments, then acquisition by Hampden Watch (Irving Wein) for mass-market distribution through Walmart/Kmart/Sears/JCPenney in the 1980s-90s, later ownership by importer M.Z. Berger. Giovanni Feroce acquired the licenses/trademarks in 2014 to relaunch Benrus as a lifestyle brand but lost trademark control in 2017 after payment defaults; USPTO records list Benrus Holdings, LLC as current trademark owner. The brand is presently active in small direct-to-consumer form (benrus.com), selling Swiss-made heritage reissues of the Type I, Type II, DTU-2A/P, and Sky Chief. Status is marked active on that basis, but continuity with the original 20th-century manufacturer is nominal — this is a revived/relicensed brand identity, not an unbroken company.
