Carl F. Bucherer
Switzerland · Founded 1888
Founded 1888 in Lucerne by Carl Friedrich Bucherer as a jewelry and watch retail house. Relaunched as a vertically integrated watch manufacture in 2001 with the Patravi collection; acquired Techniques Horlogeres Appliquees in 2007 to form Carl F. Bucherer Technologies, its in-house movement arm in Lengnau. Signature technical achievement is the peripheral rotor automatic winding system, which winds the mainspring via a ring gear around the movement's outer edge instead of a conventional central oscillating weight, leaving the full dial-side and caseback view of the movement unobstructed. Debuted in the CFB A1000 caliber (2008, 55h power reserve), later combined with a peripherally-mounted tourbillon cage in the CFB T3000 (2018) and with a peripherally-mounted minute-repeater regulator in the CFB MR3000 (2021), described by the brand as the first movement to combine three patented peripheral technologies. Family-owned for 135 years as part of Bucherer AG (the Swiss watch/jewelry retailer, a separate business from the CFB manufacture brand though sharing the family name and ownership). Rolex acquired Bucherer AG in August 2023; in February 2025 Rolex announced it was shutting down the standalone Carl F. Bucherer watch brand, citing low sales and lack of strategic fit, with boutiques closing shortly after. Status is set to discontinued to reflect this; watches remain in secondary-market and remaining-dealer-stock circulation.
