Doxa
Switzerland · Founded 1889
Founded in Le Locle in 1889 by Georges Ducommun; early success came from an 8-day movement used in dashboard clocks for Bugatti, Mercedes-Benz and Peugeot, and a gold medal at the 1906 Milan World's Fair. After Ducommun's 1936 death, son-in-law Jacques Nardin (grandson of Ulysse Nardin) led the firm; a 1957 Bauhaus-inspired 'Grafic' dress line preceded the brand's defining pivot to dive watches. In 1967 Doxa introduced the SUB 300, the first dive watch to use an orange dial for underwater visibility, developed by product manager Urs Eschle with diver Claude Wesly and input from oceanographer Jacques Cousteau after visibility testing in Lake Neuchatel. The 1968 SUB 300T 'Conquistador' added a helium escape valve and was distributed in the US exclusively through Cousteau's US Divers company; roughly 150 SUB 300T Professionals were issued to Switzerland's elite combat-diver unit 1969-1975. Aubry Freres S.A. owned the brand 1978-1983 before it went dormant; the Jenny family (via Walca S.A.) revived it in 1997 from Biel/Bienne, with Microsoft-executive-turned-partner Rick Marei driving early direct-to-consumer e-commerce growth. Jan Edocs (ex-Omega/Swatch Group) became CEO in 2019 alongside Romeo F. Jenny as board president/managing director. As of 2026 ownership is reported as sitting with Roland Sarah III, following a brief period within the Jenny/Jean Rousseau group; this most recent ownership transition is far less independently documented in the sources checked than the brand's earlier history and should be treated as [Verified: the brand is owned by the Jenny family of Bienne, Switzerland, via Walca S.A. / Walca Worldwide SA, a structure dating to the family's 1997 revival of the dormant brand. Jan Edoecs (ex-Omega/Swatch Group) has been CEO of both Montres DOXA SA and Walca Worldwide SA since 2019. No connection to a 'Roland Sarah' or a 'Jean Rousseau group' was found -- an earlier draft of this brand row's ownership claim was unsupported and has been corrected.]
