Elgin National Watch Company

United States · Founded 1864 · No longer in production

Chartered near Chicago as the National Watch Company at the close of the Civil War, renamed Elgin National Watch Company in 1874. For decades its Elgin, Illinois complex was the largest single watch-manufacturing site in the country. The original Illinois plant wound down through the 1960s, operations shifted to a new South Carolina facility, and that too shut its doors in 1968, when the Elgin trademark was sold off to other owners.
