MB&F
Switzerland · Founded 2005
Founded in Geneva in July 2005 by Maximilian Büsser, a former managing director of Jaeger-LeCoultre and head of product development at Harry Winston. MB&F (Maximilian Büsser & Friends) describes itself as a horological laboratory rather than a traditional manufacture, assembling ad hoc teams of independent watchmakers, case-makers and designers for each project rather than running a fixed in-house design office. Output splits into two lines: the avant-garde 'Horological Machines' (HM1 onward, launched 2007), kinetic sculpture-like pieces with unconventional three-dimensional case architecture, and the more classically round-cased 'Legacy Machines' (LM1 onward, launched 2011), which reinterpret nineteenth-century watchmaking around oversized suspended balance wheels. MB&F also operates M.A.D.Gallery concept-art spaces (Geneva, Dubai, Taipei, with smaller outposts in Singapore and Paris) and a lower-priced M.A.D. Editions line. Multiple pieces have won prizes at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG), including HM4 Thunderbolt (2010), LM1 (2012), LM Perpetual (2016), LM FlyingT (2019) and LM Sequential EVO, which won the GPHG's top Aiguille d'Or prize in 2022. In 2024 Chanel acquired a 25% stake in the company; Büsser retains majority ownership (around 60%), with co-founder Serge Kriknoff holding roughly 15%.
