Minase
Japan · Founded 2005
Small independent Japanese watch brand launched in 2005 by Kyowa Co., Ltd., a precision cutting-tool and drill manufacturer founded in 1963. The watchmaking workshop is sited in the Minase area of Akita Prefecture, in the Tohoku region of northern Japan (multiple sources, including the brand's own history page, watch-atlas.com, watchprosite.com and monochrome-watches.com, independently and consistently place the brand in Akita Prefecture, not Yamagata Prefecture -- this entry follows the corroborated Akita location). The brand name derives directly from that workshop location. Minase is best known for popularizing the term 'Zaratsu' (the brand's own site and some secondary sources also render it 'Sallaz') for a distortion-free flat hand-polishing technique -- long associated with Grand Seiko's higher tiers -- which Minase applies extensively to complex, multi-faceted 'case-in-case' watch cases built from Kyowa's precision-machining background. Annual production is small, reported at well under 500 watches per year. Movements are generally Swiss ebauches (ETA 2892-A2, ETA 2671) or Japanese Miyota calibers, finished and cased in-house under Minase's own caliber designations (e.g. KT7002, KT8001). One secondary source (watchtraderhub.com) names a founder 'Koichi Suzuki,' but this is not corroborated elsewhere and is treated with low confidence. Sourcing for this brand is thin relative to larger catalog entries; several historical/production-run details (e.g. exact line-launch years) could not be independently confirmed and are omitted rather than guessed.
