Movado

Switzerland · Founded 1881

Founded 1881 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, by Achille Ditesheim. Name adopted 1905, Esperanto for "always in motion." Acquired 1983 by Gedalio Grinberg's North American Watch Corporation, now Movado Group Inc. (NYSE: MOV), HQ Paramus, New Jersey; current chairman/CEO Efraim Grinberg. Movado Group also owns Concord, EBEL, Olivia Burton, MVMT and holds watch licenses for Coach, Hugo Boss, Lacoste, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein. Watchmaking/case production remains Swiss-based per Swiss Made requirements even though corporate HQ is in the US. Best known for the Museum Watch/Museum dial: a single dot at 12 o'clock symbolizing the sun at high noon, designed 1947 by American modernist Nathan George Horwitt and inducted into MoMA's permanent design collection in 1960 (Movado settled a related suit with Horwitt in 1975 for $29,000). Sourced from Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Movado) and cross-referenced retailer/DDG snippets this session; WebSearch quota was exhausted almost immediately so all research after the first two queries used WebFetch against Wikipedia and html.duckduckgo.com search-result pages rather than direct WebSearch or Monochrome Watches (movado.com itself returned a persistent "Header overflow" fetch error for every URL tried, and Monochrome's site search turned up no dedicated Movado articles) — treat sourcing as moderate-quality aggregator corroboration rather than primary-source confirmation throughout, even on rows marked high confidence for well-known brand facts.
