Founded by Giovanni Panerai in Florence as a watch shop, workshop, and watchmaking school that later became a supplier of precision instruments to the Italian Navy's divers; its wartime designs stayed under military secrecy for decades. Acquired by the Richemont group (then Vendôme) in 1997, which brought the brand to the international market.
