RGM Watch Company
United States · Founded 1992
Founded in 1992 by Roland G. Murphy in Mount Joy, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Murphy trained at Bowman Technical School in Lancaster, completed WOSTEP training in Neuchâtel, Switzerland (1986), and worked at Hamilton Watch Company from 1987, rising to Technical Director of product development, before starting RGM. Lancaster County was the historic center of American watchmaking (home to Hamilton Watch Co., whose Lancaster-made movement production ended in 1969); RGM deliberately located there to align with that heritage and draws on Pennsylvania imagery in its designs. In 2007 RGM introduced its Caliber 801, reported as the first high-grade mechanical watch movement produced in series on American soil since Hamilton's 992B ceased production in 1969. RGM followed with the tonneau-shaped Caliber 20 and the Pennsylvania Tourbillon, described by RGM and trade press as the first serially produced tourbillon wristwatch made in America, hand-finished with wolf's-tooth winding wheels and a keystone motif referencing Pennsylvania's 'Keystone State' nickname. RGM is widely cited (Monochrome Watches, The American Dial, Exquisite Timepieces) as the only vertically integrated watch manufacture in the US, producing cases, dials, and movements in-house; flagship pieces are cited at roughly 90% American-made content, with a few components (e.g. mainsprings, some jewels) still sourced internationally. RGM also builds watches around outsourced Swiss ebauches (ETA, Sellita, Valjoux) for its more accessible lines, and around restored vintage American Hamilton railroad-grade pocket watch movements for its Model 222 series. Reported annual production is small (on the order of a few hundred watches per year), sold direct from the Mount Joy workshop.
