Squale

Switzerland · Founded 1959

Swiss dive-watch manufacturer, originally an anonymous case supplier before establishing its own brand. Founded by Charles von Büren; sources disagree on the founding year of the case-making business — some sites cite 1946 (or 1948, per one account of von Büren 'assembling watches under his own name'), while Squale's official history page states 'Von Büren SA' was established in 1950; the 'Squale' trademark was registered 10 July 1959, the date Squale's current marketing treats as the brand's founding. From the 1960s-1970s, Squale-made cases equipped watches sold under other brands' names; the most detailed collector supplier lists name Blancpain, Heuer/TAG Heuer, Doxa, Sinn, and smaller houses (Altanus Genève, Arlon, Jean Perret, La Spirotechnique, Zeno, Airin, Dodane, Auricoste), plus Italian Marina Militare divers and Folgore Brigade paratroopers. A claim repeated in some enthusiast/YouTube content that Squale supplied cases for early Rolex Submariners and/or Tudor divers could not be corroborated against primary sourcing or the detailed supplier lists checked here (which omit Rolex/Tudor) and should be treated as unverified folklore, not fact. Von Büren sold the company to the Maggi family, previously its Italian distributors, around 1982; mechanical production reportedly lapsed around 1989 amid the quartz crisis. The Maggi family relaunched production headquartered in Milan (sources vary between 2005 and 2010), moving headquarters to Ticino/Chiasso, Switzerland in 2020 while retaining Swiss manufacturing. Andrea Maggi is documented in 2020s trade press/podcast appearances as CEO. Some secondary sources allude to a more fragmented, harder-to-document period in Squale's recent commercial history, but this entry could not verify a formally documented split of the trademark between distinct legal entities across markets, so that claim is omitted rather than asserted.
