Urwerk

Switzerland · Founded 1997

Geneva-based independent manufacture founded by watchmaker Felix Baumgartner, his brother Thomas Baumgartner, and designer Martin Frei. The trio conceived the concept at a student gathering over New Year 1995/1996 and debuted the UR-101 and UR-102 at Baselworld 1997, introducing the wandering-hour “satellite” display that remains the brand's signature. The name fuses “Ur” (the ancient Mesopotamian city; German for “primeval/original”) with “werk” (German for “work/mechanism”). Known for futuristic, aircraft- and spacecraft-inspired case design built around satellite/orbital hour displays, and later for the EMC line, which lets an owner optically measure and manually correct their own movement's rate. Annual production is deliberately small. Headquartered at Place du Bourg-de-Four, Geneva.
