Wittnauer
United States · Founded 1885
Founded in New Rochelle, NY by Swiss immigrant Albert Wittnauer (sources vary: first watches sold c.1880, 'A. Wittnauer Company' formally established 1885, incorporated 1888). A classic American-marketed, Swiss-movement brand selling Swiss quality at American-middle-class prices. Became the exclusive U.S. sales agent for Longines starting in the 1880s; in 1936 the firm was renamed Longines-Wittnauer Watch Company, and at its peak its U.S. distribution reportedly carried a large share of Longines' global revenue. Sources disagree on when Longines took an actual ownership stake vs. a distribution deal -- cited as either 1936 (rebrand) or 1950 (Wikipedia's acquisition date). Westinghouse Electric acquired Longines-Wittnauer in 1969. Swatch Group (Longines' owner since 1983) ended the 100+ year U.S. distribution partnership in 1994-95, taking direct control of Longines' American distribution; the remaining firm restyled as 'Wittnauer International.' Bulova acquired the standalone brand for $11.6M in September 2001. Citizen Watch Co. acquired Bulova, and with it Wittnauer, in 2007/2008. CURRENT STATUS (genuinely ambiguous across sources): Wikipedia says the brand 'remains active,' and Wittnauer-branded quartz watches still sell as 'new' through retailers (e.g. Chrono24). But specialist brand-tracking sources (watch-atlas.com) classify Wittnauer as 'defunct,' phased out as a distinct, independently-designed brand by the early 2000s, and vintage-watch guides call the modern nameplate 'only a budget quartz brand under Citizen's umbrella, bearing no meaningful connection' to the historic watches collectors care about. The legal nameplate persists under Citizen/Bulova and occasionally appears on new budget product, but there is no independently-run Wittnauer watchmaking operation or current design identity comparable to its 1920s-1970s heyday. Read 'active' here as 'dormant/licensed legacy nameplate,' not an operating watchmaker with its own design voice.
